• Cut and trim hair according to the client’s instructions or preferences
• Shampoo customers’ hair
• Provide other hair treatments, such as waving, straightening, and tinting, and also provide scalp conditioning massages
• Apply bleach, tints, dyes, or rinses to color, frost, or streak hair
• Apply hair extensions
• Clean and style wigs and hair pieces
• Cut, trim, taper, curl, wave, perm and style hair
• Suggest hair style compatible with the client’s physical features and preferences

1. Earn a high school diploma or GED

You won’t need a college degree to become a hair designer, but most board-approved cosmetology programs require a high school diploma or the equivalent.

Some cosmetology and barbering state boards offer apprenticeship programs to those who want to gain early practical experience in the field. Students can often apply when they turn 16.
